“The Transfiguration” by The Rev. Kaji Douša

I love the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration, in which he takes his disciples up to a mountaintop, and then he starts praying. And while he’s praying, his whole face changes. Now I often wondered, what is the Transfiguration all about? What was it that Jesus wanted to show the disciples? Was it so that they could, finally, start to behold his glory? Perhaps. But I also like to think that Jesus always invites us to follow him. And there’s something about the moment of prayer, in which Jesus changed. And I wondered if he wanted the disciples to know, that in our moments of prayer, we too, should change. C. S. Lewis famously said, “Prayer doesn’t change God, it changes us.” The Transfiguration then, winds up being an example of what happens within us, when we are willing to risk what it takes to open our hearts to God, and as we do, we change, we become transfigured – our countenance becomes even more full of the glory that God intends for us. So pray. And see how God will change you. Amen.
