“God Did Not Create Death” by The Rev. Kaji Douša
I wanted to talk to y’all about a passage that I hadn’t spent a lot of time with, from the Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 1 verse 13, which says that God did not create death, and God does not delight in the death of the living. I wanted to think about that because so many people think that God takes us from our lives. But what interestingly happens in this text from the Wisdom of Solomon is that they point out that it was actually not God who created death, but the Devil. And that death is not real to God. And I thought that was powerful to think about because God is so big, and God is life. And God is love. And because of life and love and how that is all woven into God, death is not real to God. So the question is, is the Devil real? And death is a part of our lives, but it’s such a blip on the screen of God’s that God doesn’t even pay attention to it. Remember that. Focusing so much on death and dying and all the things that could take you away from this life, takes you away from your focus on God. God doesn’t intend you to be worried about your death. Because death isn’t a thing for God. Amen.
