#BeThePark – “Be the Servant” by Rev. Luis-Alfredo Cartagena-Zayas
Dear Park Family and Friends,
Making sense of God’s simultaneous love for us and God’s sovereignty over suffering will for me always be a mystery. It is certainly possible to put forward theological arguments that are remarkably satisfactory at an intellectual level, but you know this is not me. Rather, I’d prefer to speak from my heart.
As many of you know you have blessed me with the of overseeing of one of The Park’s signature ecumenical ministries, The Saturday Community Lunch Program (SCLP), presently in its 26th year. As a result of your love, commitment and financial generosity each Saturday we offer, not just food, but fellowship and Christ’s love to those less fortunate in our city.
Every Saturday through your generous giving The Park demonstrates that “We Are Disciples a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.” Although the number of guests we serve fluctuates from administration to administration depending upon who reside in political office weekly guests have ranged from 65 – 210 men, women and at times children. Presently each week we are serving 75-120 people each Saturday.
Who are they? They are members of Jesus’ Beloved Community who find themselves homeless. They are our kindred from the LGBTQ community in need of love, friendship and a safe place to eat. They are elderly individuals who use the money they would have spent on groceries toward vital medication or rent. They are the mentally infirmed who find themselves unable to cope and on the street or the undocumented Day Laborer who couldn’t find work. They are God’s children like you and I, therefore making each one our sister and brother.
As we approach The Season of Giving let us remember Mathew, 6:21 “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
This is what it means To Be The Park.
Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Entender el amor simultáneo de Dios por nosotros y la soberanía de Dios sobre el sufrimiento siempre será un misterio para mí. Son los enfermos mentales que se encuentran incapacitados para hacer frente y en la calle o el jornalero indocumentado que no pudo encontrar trabajo. Son hijos de Dios como tú y yo, por lo tanto, hacemos de cada uno nuestra hermana y hermano.
A medida que nos acercamos a The Season of Giving, recordemos a Mateo, 6:21 “porque donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón”.
Esto es lo que significa Ser El Parque.
