Park Avenue Christian Church has a strong history of support and patronage of the performing arts. Continuing in that tradition, we are developing a distinctive Artist-in-Residence program that will enrich and broaden the life of the congregation and community, welcoming individual artists and ensembles to collaborate with us in the years to come.
Compagnia de’ Colombari
In 2011 we invited a New York-based theater company, Compagnia de’ Colombari to serve as our first Artists-in-Residence. Their production of “More or Less I Am”, a musical adaptation of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass”, was featured in our 2011-12 Arts at The Park concert series. The company has participated regularly in worship, bringing its unique style of Brechtian street theater to services in Advent and Lent.
Deanna Witkowski was artist-in-residence from the fall of 2012 through the spring of 2014. She now serves as The Park’s Interim Music Director. Deanna’s original sacred music has been performed regularly in worship and she was commissioned to compose a original piece of choral music for our 2012 Christmas Gala (hear “Glistening Lily” here). In February 2013, she spearheaded a concert of sacred music by the legendary jazz pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams as part of our 2012-13 Arts at The Park series.
